FEATURED FIGHTER

Every month we will feature a fighter and give the public a chance to know him or her. This fighter does not have to have fought in one of our shows. He or She may be an amateur or professional from anywhere in the world. If you know of a fighter who would be interested in spreading their name, or are one, send contact info to promoter@stepupfc.com.
Our First featured fighter is Patrick Long of Team Panda Grappling. ..........

SUFC: First off what is your Martial Arts Background?

Patrick Long:I started training Shorin-Ryu Karate under Larry Tankston for three years at the age of 12. I played highschool and college football and track. I had a real bad motorcycle accident which stopped me from playing Semi-pro football. I came across Progressive Martial Arts Academy which taught Jeet Kune Do. This helped me rehab and establish a new training routine. I started doing grappling tournaments and enjoying them. I started training at the Jiu Jitsu Institute and did several Judo Tournaments. I wanted to get some MMA matches before I turned 40. So I tried a match on my own to see how that went.

SUFC: What made you decide to jumkp into the cage for this event? This is something not everyone has the courage to do.

Patrick Long:My first match made me realize that I needed a different training routine. So I trained heavily with Panda Grappling.

SUFC: How did you prepare for this tournament?

Patrick Long:I changed my workout routine, eating habits, work hours. I even took a trip to train with stand up specialist Greg Slack in Jackson Tn.

SUFC:What do you think of the other fighters in your division?

Patrick Long:My opponents were great in a way they challenged me to find a way to adjust my normal habits.

SUFC:How does it feel to be the first Heavyweight Champion of Step Up F/C?

Patrick Long:It feels great being the Heavyweight Champ. I made several sacrifices to earn the belt. It feels good when hard work pays off.

SUFC: Do you think age is a factor in this type of competition? Patrick was the oldest fighter in his division.

Patrick Long:I think age becomes a factor if you let it.

SUFC:What does the future hold for you?

Patrick Long: The future is what anyone wants to make of it. I'm enjoying the moment, new training, partners and new challenges.
